Ask Lambda Legal – Medicare and Sex Reassignment Surgeries by Karen Loewy, Senior Attorney and Seniors Program Strategist, Lambda Legal

Q: I am transgender woman in my late 60’s. I only recently came out and I’m not sure what type of transition-related medical care I need yet. What is covered by my Medicare plan for people like me?

A: Congratulations on coming out! There have been some recent changes in coverage for transgender people who have Medicare, and thankfully the changes are headed in the right direction.

On May 30, 2014, a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) review board ruled that transgender people receiving Medicare may no longer be automatically denied coverage for sex reassignment surgeries. Before this, Medicare, the federal government’s health insurance program for people over the age of 65 and people living with long-term disabilities, uniformly banned coverage of sex reassignment surgeries (SRS) for its nearly 50 million beneficiaries.  Now, Medicare recipients can seek coverage for all medically necessary transition-related health care, including routine preventive care, hormone therapy, and surgeries.

How To Have A Healthy Cookout

How To Have A Healthy Cookout by Davey Wavey

While enjoying the summertime weather, there are a few simple steps that you can take to make your cookout significantly healthier. And you’ll be one step closer to looking like Zac Efron. Yum.

Here are my suggestions:

Use whole wheat buns and rolls. We all know that whole wheat bread products have several nutritional advantages over white bread and other refined grains. But did you know that hamburger buns and hot dog rolls are also available in whole wheat varieties? But don’t be fooled; “wheat” isn’t the same as “whole wheat” and multigrain doesn’t necessarily mean healthier. Read the ingredients carefully.

The Out Experience by Luke Gordon

From Inner Turmoil to Empowerment, Freedom, and Peace: Ann’s Story

Welcome to the first entry in a blog series entitled The Out Experience. One of the purposes of this blog is to share true coming out stories from the perspective of individuals who have come out and parents who have had a child come out to highlight the process, benefits, challenges, and outcomes so that someone who is planning on coming out or is a parent, can gain some awareness of what to expect. As a life coach who is passionate about helping people with the coming out transition, I believe that developing a strategic, systematic plan will enable the process to go smoother with less stress and fewer regrets. Part of that plan involves educating yourself with the knowledge and wisdom gained from the experiences of others who have gone through it. Another purpose is to share true stories of LGBT allies to highlight what has contributed to them being accepting and supportive of the LGBT community and what guidance they can offer when a friend or family member comes out. I intend for this blog to be interactive, so I welcome comments, questions, and topic ideas. With that said, let’s begin our journey with From Inner Turmoil to Empowerment, Freedom, and Peace: Ann’s Story.

“Can We Forgive You?”: A Manifesto

“Can We Forgive You?”: A Manifesto by Warren J. Blumenfeld

Though I have contemplated writing this for many years, I have continually put it off because it represents thoughts and feelings I never really wanted to make visible. I believed that if I relegated them to the recesses of my consciousness, over time, they would simply evaporate sparing me the task of putting pen to paper (or more appropriately, key strokes to computer screen). But no matter how hard I have tried to let go of the pain and hurt, nonetheless, these thoughts and feelings keep resurfacing. Maybe now if I write them down, maybe I can let go.

It began for me back in 1987 when I first learned that one of my favorite writers and personalities had died in France at the relatively young age of 63. James Baldwin, essayist, novelist, poet, playwright, activist, hero to many including myself, expatriated to France where he lived much of his later life. He was attracted to the cultural and political progressivism of the Left Bank, where he could escape the pressures of Jim Crow racism and the enormity of heterosexism in the United States, and where his creative energy could soar. His numerous works directly tackled issues of race, sexuality, and socioeconomic class with an unflinching and inescapable honesty, and with a clear indictment of the corrupt systems of power that dominated his native land.
